Andrew Bain

Andrew Bain

Andrew Bain is a Melbourne-based writer who spends too much time wandering when he should be working. Formerly a sports journalist, he's written about travel and adventure for newspapers and magazines around the world for the last decade, including Australian Geographic, Global, The Age and South China Morning Post. He's the author of The Six Degrees of Danny Dickfos and Headwinds, the story of his 20,000km bicycle ride around Australia. In 2003 he was awarded the Australian Geographic story of the year. In between travels Andrew joined Lonely Planet as an editor and commissioning editor before returning to life as a writer, choosing adventure over avarice. He has trekked, cycled or kayaked his way around five continents.

Andrew was born in Adelaide and has been slowly making his way east around Australia ever since, living in Mt Gambier then Melbourne, broken by a few years fulfilling his backpacking tour of duty across Europe. He needs only to visit Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania to complete the set of European countries (he once had a ticket to Albania but the ferry was cancelled on him). He's unwittingly smuggled goods across the China-Russia border and swears the flick knife that turned up in his backpack at Bariloche?s airport wasn't his.

Andrew's favourite locations are the extremes ? the fjords of Norway, the peaks of the Patagonian Andes and the Australian deserts are among his favourite travel environments. His fondest travel tip is encapsulated in a line from Eric Newby: ?If there is a way of seeing less of a place than from a car, I am yet to find it.'
