Robert Reid
A graduate from Lonely Planet's Oakland and London offices, Robert has updated many Lonely Planet guidebooks, including New York City, Trans-Siberian Railway, Romania, Myanmar (Burma), Central America and the USA. He's written about his travels in various US newspapers and has created his own online site for travel to Vietnam (photo essay and he ranks the unheralded spots (be it Vidin, Bulgaria, or the Nebraska panhandle), above the Parises and Tuscanys and Grand Canyons, as the core of what drew him to travel.
He believes the most underrated parts of learning about a destination includes seeing sports (eg caged-in stands and stormtrooper police at Guatemalan minor-league soccer games) and movies (eg Thai audience's sudden standing-at-attention as the national anthem plays), and occasionally traveling alone. He now lives in Brooklyn.
